GAA legend ties the knot in stunning ceremony during off-season

The GAA season is nearly over, with the All-Stars announced and the club competitions whittled down to the last few in each province. It’s the perfect time for some relaxation and a favourite period for many footballers and hurlers to get hitched, knowing it won’t interfere with any matches.

One such player is Monaghan GAA icon and three-time All-Star Conor McManus. The Clontibret man selected 14 November as the day to finally say ‘I do’ with his wife Hannah Gallagher in front of their loved ones.

His partner is also deeply rooted in the GAA, hailing from nearby Emyvale in the Farney county. Hannah is the sister of Emyvale and Monaghan star Karl Gallagher, who has recently returned from a brief spell playing Aussie Rules down under.

McManus and his partner have been together for a while and have enjoyed events like the GAA All-Stars in recent years, where the legendary forward received awards in 2013, 2015 and 2018.

While McManus’ season has ended and the Clontibret lads can unwind, the Gallagher family and all of Emyvale are keeping an eye on Sunday’s Ulster Junior Football Championship semi-final against Munterconnaught of Cavan, reports the Irish Mirror.

McManus battled with hip pain in the latter part of his career and finally hung up his county boots last winter.

In a chat with The Irish Times earlier this year, he confessed that he knew it was time to retire after a short walk near his home in Monaghan took a turn for the worse.

“I had to ring a friend of mine to come and lift me,” he said. “The pain in my hips was so bad that I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it back to the house.

“And that’s been going on a couple of years now. So like, where would you be going trying to compete in inter’county football when you can’t even go for walks?”.

“The well was dry. That was just basically it. I walk with a limp most of the time and have been for a couple of years. It’s just that I’ve managed to walk in a certain way that maybe you wouldn’t notice it. But if you were looking at me getting out of the car, for the first 15 or 20 steps I’d definitely be limping.”

Throughout 18 outstanding seasons with Monaghan across 202 appearances, he amassed an impressive scoring record of 25-708. His championship tally of 9-291 in 77 matches places him fourth on the all-time list behind Cillian O’Connor, Colm Cooper and Dean Rock.
