Brendan Rodgers certain to leave Celtic as pundit warns of ‘dangerous situation’

Brendan Rodgers is in the final year of his contract at Celtic and has yet to be offered a new deal by the Parkhead hierarchy amid a difficult start to the season

Michael Stewart believes there’s absolutely NO possibility Brendan Rodgers will remain as Celtic boss next season.

Rodgers is currently in his final year of his second spell at the helm and is yet to receive a contract extension offer from the Parkhead bosses.

The Northern Irishman is experiencing what could be described as the most challenging phase of his Celtic career with the club falling well short of expectations both at home and across Europe, reports the Daily Record.

A disastrous summer transfer window coupled with an embarrassing Champions League elimination at the hands of Kazakhstani underdogs has left Celtic supporters at loggerheads with a beleaguered board.

However, Rodgers is now under mounting pressure as results both domestically and in European competition continue to disappoint, with the Bhoys trailing league leaders Hearts by five points.

Despite the turmoil engulfing Parkhead, Rodgers publicly revealed last month his desire to prolong his Celtic tenure under specific circumstances.

Yet pundit Stewart is convinced the third most triumphant manager in the club’s illustrious history will be seeking fresh challenges when the season concludes.

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club programme, he said: “At the start of the season and the way things were, I genuinely thought that had things worked out well, I think he’d have been open to staying.

“But the way things have panned out, I don’t think there’s any chance.

“I do think that the way he is at the moment, the way the club are being run and the way he’s now understandably underwhelmed with it all, I think it’s a very, very dangerous situation for Celtic to be in.

“You’ve got all of this campaign where it just feels like they are treading water a little bit.

“There’s no real dynamism and that’s dangerous.”

When questioned about his future last month, Rodgers revealed: “It hasn’t really changed from the last time. I would love to stay here longer, I’ve had informal chats with Dermot (Desmond) and Michael (Nicholson) but no offer to consider.”

When pushed on whether he’d be prepared to commit to fresh terms, he responded: “100 per cent. I guaranteed I would do three years, and if going forward if I do get offered a deal, there does have to be conditions in that, that allow me to work the best I can.”
