Jim White (Dirty Three) announces solo album and leads with the atmospheric title track ‘Inner Day’, with Australian and US dates ahead with Ed Kuepper – Backseat Mafia

The premiere Australian percussionist and living icon Jim White – the power house engine behind the skins in Dirty Three, has announced the release of his second ever solo album ‘Inner Day’ on 24 October through Drag City Records, expanding his massive musical repertoire as lyricist and vocalist.

The lead single, the title track, features White’s own lyrics and his spoken, deep sonorous voice. He says enigmatically of the themes:

‘Inner Day’ is about veils and how the unconscious doesn’t follow the waking person’s clock. It doesn’t follow the external so-called laws of temporality and causality. Do you?

The track is sparse and atmospheric, where the spaces in-between are haunting and evocative, White’s voice mesmerising and the delicate patter of percussion to the fore. A church organ provides a soothing wash. The accompanying video by Tran features White in a large house filled with character, pottering about in a sort of fugue doing mundane activities that becomes reflective and soothing through the brooding music:

The single is out now and can be downloaded and streamed here. You can pe-order the album here and through the link below:

In just the past five years, White’s collaborators include Bill Callahan, Cat Power, Daniel Blumberg, Ed Kuepper and Mess Esque, alongside communal experiences in Xylouris White, Jim White and Marisa Anderson, The Double, Springtime, Beings, The Hard Quartet and Dirty Three. Coming forty years into his career, his first solo album felt like some kind of breakthrough happening.

On my first album ‘All Hits: Memories’, I wanted to have a keyboard sound to keep the drums company as together they celebrated why some things just ‘hit’ the psyche, why some memories stick. Later, I found the notes wanted to move more and so on my second album ‘Inner Day’, that is what they do.

Working again with co-producer and long-time collaborator Guy Picciotto, White travels further into the hypnotic relationships that they captured on his first record.

Additionally, White and Picciotto have joined with Colleen Burke to create the Jim White Trio. They will make their first performance at Bad Bonn Kilbi in Switzerland on Thursday, September 5.

White will then reunite with Ed Kuepper in Australia for a limited run of October shows in support of their new album After the Flood.
