The Last Dinner Party have released ‘Second Best’, the latest glimpse into their forthcoming album From The Pyre, set for release on 17 October 2025. Written by guitarist Emily Roberts, the track takes its cues from the angular art-pop of Sparks, pairing sharp melodic hooks with raw self-reflection on heartbreak, obsession, and self-worth.
Roberts describes ‘Second Best’ as “about the push and pull of being obsessed with someone but knowing they will betray you again, and allowing it to happen because you still love them.” She adds, “I wish I could go back and say to myself that I am worth more than that… I hope the song captures the pain, anger and despair I felt, but also the defiance and satisfaction of being able to immortalise that person in song.”
Once the framework was laid down, bandmates Abi, Lizzie, Aurora, and Georgia shaped the track into its final form — injecting it with dancing keys, formidable bass, and an anthemic pulse that feels both defiant and cathartic. It’s the third track teased from From The Pyre, following the western-tinged ‘This Is The Killer Speaking’ and the slow-burning introspection of ‘The Scythe’.
Produced by Markus Dravs (Wolf Alice, Florence & The Machine, Björk), From The Pyre finds the London five-piece expanding their mythic world. The album, as the band describe it, “is a collection of stories bound by the idea of ‘The Pyre’ — a place of violence and destruction but also regeneration, passion and light.”
Lyrically, From The Pyre reaches for the grand and the symbolic — saints, sailors, floods, and infernos — yet remains grounded in emotional truth. “This record feels darker, more raw and earthy,” the band explain. “It’s looking out at a sublime landscape rather than sitting at an opulent table.”
Having already claimed two BRIT Awards, including Breakthrough Artist, and selling out shows worldwide — among them three nights at London’s Eventim Apollo — The Last Dinner Party’s sophomore era looks poised to reinforce their reputation as one of Britain’s most captivating and conceptually ambitious young bands.
The Last Dinner Party will be touring Australia and New Zealand next year.
