A PSNI officer who was recently sacked for sending sectarian, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and sexualised WhatsApp messages is a senior member of the Royal British Legion in Northern Ireland.

The charity has said that it has now launched an investigation into the issue in order to see if the former officer’s actions are in accordance with its values and behaviours.

The officer, who is a senior member of a Co Antrim branch of the Royal British Legion, was sacked recently by the PSNI following a Police Ombudsman investigation into complaints of sectarian, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and sexualised WhatsApp messages.

The police watchdog’s office said the messages were sent over a period of months, including when the officer was on duty, and the WhatsApps continued even after the officer had been asked – twice – to stop by the complainant.

The PONI investigation began in July 2023, with a file being sent to the PSNI Professional Standards Department on October 4. A misconduct hearing took place on June 20, 2025.

It has been alleged that the charity was aware of the allegations against the racist former officer throughout that time and concerns have been raised that the member was allowed to represent the RBL at high profile events in 2024 despite this.

A spokesperson for the Royal British Legion said: “Legion Complaints Committee has been made aware of the situation and will be investigating the matter further, in accordance with the RBL’s values and behaviours.”
