Former senior PSNI officer Jon Burrows has been selected as the UUP’s latest North Antrim MLA.

Since leaving the police service, where he headed up the internal discipline branch, on health grounds in 2021, Mr Burrows has made a career as a commentator. He is understood to have been one of four candidates interviewed for the role.

He will replace Colin Crawford who was co-opted in to replace Robin Swann as MLA for North Antrim in July last year following Mr Swann’s election to the House of Commons, in a move which led to the eventual resignation of former party leader Doug Beattie.

Mr Crawford announced his resignation in a June social media post. It later emerged that he had resigned following a disagreement over the wording of a party press release condemning the disorder in Ballymena within his constituency the week prior.

Jon Burrows previously spoke at the TUV conference earlier this year, however he was not a part member at the time.

An Ulster Unionist Party spokesperson said, “After a rigorous internal selection process with independent oversight, we can now confirm that Jon Burrows has been selected to fill the vacancy of North Antrim MLA.

“We would like to thank Colin Crawford for his dedicated service to the Assembly over the last year and wish him well with future endeavours.”

Cllr Brian Thompson, Chair of the North Antrim Association, said: “I want to start by thanking Colin for all of his efforts over the last year and wish him well.

“We also want to thank all those who put their name forward and took part in the selection process.

“We are delighted to have Jon on board. Jon is an exceptional individual who has been appointed as the new MLA for North Antrim, and we look forward to working with him over the coming weeks and months ahead.”
