GAA officials are poised to investigate a shocking brawl that erupted in the stands during a weekend Championship quarter-final clash in Aughrim.

Worrying video clips have surfaced on social media showing violence that flared amongst spectators as Carnew Emmets defeated Rathnew 2-14 to 1-8 in the Wicklow senior championship.

Several people became embroiled in the fracas, with some fans scrambling down from the terraces to join the confrontation.

Footage shows a player being repeatedly struck by a supporter before other spectators intervened.

At one point in the video, a youngster can be seen being lifted and carried to safety away from the violence, reports the Irish Mirror.

Wicklow Chairperson Damien Byrne informed the Wicklow People that the County Board “does not condone this behaviour in our games,” whilst warning that the clubs involved could face financial penalties.

One spectator at the match described the incidents as “disgraceful.”
