Monday, September 1 marks the start of ‘meteorological autumn’ and after what’s likely to be the hottest summer on record, we’re already starting to see nights drawing in and temperatures feeling cooler.

And Met Office forecasters have issued fresh weather predictions ahead of the start of meteorological autumn. In its outlook for Monday to Wednesday, the Met Office said conditions in Northern Ireland will remain unsettled with showers and longer spells of rain possible.

The weather is expected to be windy throughout bringing blustery showers and the risk of some thundery outbreaks while temperatures are expected to remain average for the time of year.

Senior meteorologist with The Met Office Zoe Hutin said: “The weather for the next few days is certainly going to be feeling autumnal.

“We can expect blustery showers to continue through much of this week, and whilst there will be some drier, brighter interludes at times, some of the showers could be heavy and rather prolonged, merging into longer spells of rain at times.”

Ms Hutin continued: “Into next week, we’re expecting to see a mixture of sunny spells, scattered showers, and longer spells of rain, led by a succession of low-pressure systems moving in from the Atlantic. Rain could again be heavy, bringing a risk of thunderstorms and strong winds at times.

“Temperatures are expected to be around average for early September, perhaps a little above in the slightly sunnier South East, but unlikely to be the main headline in the days to come.

“Expect top temperatures in the high-teens or low-20s Celsius, however, with the cloud, wind, and rain, it may feel a little cooler in places, especially around western facing coasts.”

The forecaster has said this summer has “almost certainly” been the UK’s warmest as the mean average temperature for the season stood at 16.13°C, based on data up to August 28.

If this season is confirmed as setting a new high for average temperature, it will mean all of the UK’s top five warmest summers will have occurred since the year 2000.

This is what we can expect in Belfast over the coming days:

Monday:

A dry start in the east otherwise a mixture of bright or sunny intervals and showers, some heavy with chance of isolated thunder. Maximum temperature 18°C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Sunny intervals and showers on Tuesday and Wednesday, perhaps a longer spell of rain in east on Wednesday, with lighter winds. Thursday breezy with sunny intervals and showers.

UK long range weather forecast: Friday 5 September – Sunday 14 September

Changeable weather conditions are expected across the UK during this period with low pressure systems tending to dominate the overall pattern. This will mean showers or longer spells of rain will affect much of the UK at times. Some heavy rain or showers are expected in places, most often in the west.

Thunderstorms and hail are also possible, as are some spells of strong winds if any deep areas of low pressure form in the vicinity of the UK. Some short-lived spells of drier and more settled weather are also possible at times, especially early and again late in the period, when they may last a little longer. Temperatures will likely be close to average or slightly below overall, but may rise above at times in any drier, sunnier spells.
