The owners of a dog who went missing in Co Down are appealing for the public’s help in locating their missing pet.

Lucinda Dickson’s daughter’s Spaniel Labrador cross named Mabel went missing on Friday afternoon, August 15, at around 3.30pm, in the Mourne Mountains area.

The 3-year-old dog became separated from owner Ellie on Doan Mountain, with the Dickson family “worried sick”. Mabel is chocolate in colour with a white chest.

On Tuesday, Newtownards woman Lucinda told Belfast Live how worried the family are and added: “It’s my daughter’s dog, but it lives in our family home.

“Ellie has been sleeping in her car at the mountain from Friday. We got her off the mountain last night but she’s still been staying in Newcastle.”

She added: “It is completely and utterly heart-breaking honestly. Ellie rescued Mabel about a year and a half ago. She’s very friendly and also quite timid, never leaves Ellie’s side or anybody’s side that is walking her, that’s why the whole thing is very strange.

“We walked up at 5 o’clock this morning to where Ellie had lost her… it’s very, very open – so whether she has got disorientated when sniffing about or what – I don’t know.”

The Dickson family are asking the public to keep their eyes peeled, and say the support they have received so far has been “absolutely overwhelming”.

“Drones have been up… all the mountain hiking teams… it’s been unbelievable, but just no sightings of her”, Lucinda said.

She added that there had been two possible sightings of Mabel, but that these are unconfirmed.

The Co Down woman continued: “We are prepared to give a substantial cash reward for safe return only.”

In a social media statement, Police Newry, Mourne and Down said: “Police in Newcastle are appealing for the assistance of the public in helping to locate a lost dog in the area of the Mourne Mountains. The lost dog is a 3 year old Chocolate Spaniel Labrador cross called Mabel.

“Mabel became separated from its owners on Doan Mountain on Friday the 15th of August. Its possible that the dog may have wandered down into Newcastle town. If you have been travelling in the Mournes and have seen Mabel we would ask if you could report it us on 101.”
