Thousands of students will be getting their GCSE results on August 21
With exam results just around the corner, thousands of students across Northern Ireland are feeling the familiar mix of excitement and nerves that comes with this pivotal moment. To those awaiting their GCSE results on Thursday 21st August, it’s completely natural to feel anxious about what lies ahead.
As Principal and Chief Executive of South West College – and as someone who began my own career moving from academic study into an apprenticeship, on to professional examinations, and later returning to higher education – I know there is a pathway for everyone.
My own family have progressed their careers through a mix of academic and vocational routes, including Higher Level Apprenticeships. The challenge is to make the most of every opportunity along the way.

Your Results Don’t Define Your Future
First and foremost, remember that these exam results are just one snapshot of your academic journey. They don’t determine your potential and what you can achieve in life. I’ve seen students who didn’t get the grades they expected go on to have incredibly successful careers. Sometimes, a different path than the one you originally planned can lead to even better opportunities.
Embrace the Possibilities
If your results aren’t what you hoped for, don’t panic. Northern Ireland’s Further Education colleges offer exceptional opportunities – often more direct routes to employment than traditional university courses – with strong industry connections and hands-on learning.
Consider All Your Options
From Level 3 vocational courses equivalent to A-levels, to Traineeships that combine workplace experience with academic qualifications – there truly is something for everyone with FE.
Apprenticeships deserve serious consideration too – these programmes allow you to earn while you learn, gaining professional qualifications and getting hands-on experience. From Engineering to Pharmacy Services, Computing and IT to Health and Social Care – these apprenticeships can fast-track your career in growing industries.
Seek Support and Advice
Take time to explore what’s available – all six of our Further Education colleges will have information events running throughout August, and our doors are always open for advice and guidance. Our careers teams are here throughout the results period to provide advice tailored to your individual situation. We can help match your interests and abilities with courses and career paths you might not have previously considered.
Take Your Time
While results day can feel urgent, remember that you don’t need to make your decisions immediately. It’s better to take a few days to process your results, research your options thoroughly, and make an informed choice.
Your journey is uniquely yours. Whether you’re celebrating the results you worked for or adjusting your plans based on unexpected outcomes, remember that this is just the beginning.
Results day marks the exciting start of your next adventure and whatever path you choose, make sure it’s one that genuinely interests and motivates you. I wish each and every one of you the very best as you take your next steps – and remember, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
