Lelie and Ivis, who are based in Miami, shared a clip of their reaction to social media – and it’s since gone viral with more than 1.3 million views and 150,000 likes
Two American tourists were left gobsmacked after placing a shrimp order whilst holidaying in Europe. The visitors anticipated something completely different from what they had requested – though many reckon the blunder was entirely their own doing. Lelie and Ivis, who come from Miami, appeared to assume they would receive a portion of peeled prawns brought to their table.
Nevertheless, they sat in bewildered silence when the seafood turned up complete with shells intact. The pair captioned their TikTok footage: “POV: You order shrimp in Europe. Sir, why the head?” Following the Americans’ TikTok upload of their response, numerous viewers were baffled by what the issue actually was.
However, some observers noted the tourists hadn’t anticipated seeing the prawn’s head still connected. Within the comments area, users highlighted that the seafood was probably of superior quality.
One commented: “The reason is to show you the fish is fresh. When the fish is not fresh there is no head, because the head decays fast. Hope this helps.”
Another commenter added: “I fear people in the USA don’t know the word ‘fresh’.” A third shared: “I’ve been living in Japan too long to understand what the problem is here.”
Meanwhile, others have noted it doesn’t require much time to remove the prawn’s head.
One user commented: “In Europe, we peel off the whole shrimp starting from the head. It takes like a second to remove it. Seriously, how do you people eat seafood?”
Another commented: “I am amazed everyone gets so weird when seeing the whole shrimp. It’s very normal not only in Europe but other countries. You just pull it apart and eat the part you’re used to eating. It ain’t that deep.”
However, not everyone was ridiculing the TikTok clip – with some stating they had previously ordered prawns and never received them served with the head still on.
One user posted: “I’ve never had my shrimp served this way either. It doesn’t make her weird. She’s just experiencing something different.”
Another commented: “Do NOT order shrimp in Europe.”
A third shared: “Shrimps are smaller, and they are served with the heads in Europe! I was as surprised as her the first time I ordered them!”
Some have also highlighted that you can get prawns with the heads still intact in the United States.
One food enthusiast posted: “I mean, you can get shrimp with heads in America too. Seafood boils, Mexican restaurants.”
Another commented: “I’ve lived on both coasts and in the Midwest, travelled to many states, and haven’t seen it served this way. It’s not to say they don’t but it wouldn’t be weird for her to have never seen it before.”
