Rory McIlroy was hopeful that he’d “found something” ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship this week at East Lake.

The Masters champion finished T12 in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley with Scottie Scheffler winning by two shots from Robert MacIntyre, who had led by four shots going into the final round on Sunday.

By the seventh hole, Scheffler had assumed the lead and never gave it back and a stunning chip-in birdie on the par-three 17 sealed the win for the world number one.

Scheffler has now won five times this season and 18 times on the PGA Tour while MacIntyre felt was left to rue one that got away.

“I got off to an absolutely horrific start,” said MacIntyre.

“I felt great going out today. I wasn’t even expecting to be over par, to be honest. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have been the last couple of days.

“My golf ball was going miles. I don’t know why. I need to work that out. I feel I’ve hit good shots, and I’ve gone miles.”

When asked by reporters what he needed to improve on, he replied: “Right now, not a clue. Right now I want to go and smash up my golf clubs, to be honest with you.”

McIlroy, meanwhile, slated his first round on Thursday as “awful” and felt he played poorly for the first six holes on Sunday before finding his form to card another level par round of 70 to finish at three under-par for the tournament – some 12 shots behind Scheffler.

“The game was awful for the first six holes and then I actually felt like I found something, especially on the back nine there,” said McIlroy.

“So definitely something to build off going into next week. But yeah, it was, you know, this week was, you know, my three weeks off. I really didn’t do anything in those three weeks.

“So I was probably expecting too much to be, you know, to get there, get in contention. But there was glimmers of really good stuff in there this week. And as I said, I felt like I found a bit of a groove over those last nine holes.

“So certainly something to build off going into the Tour Championship next week.”

Like Justin Rose last week, Scheffler claimed the $3.6 million share of the $20 million prize pot, but he also receives a $5 million bonus for leading the FedEx Cup standings going into the season finale at the Tour Championship.

Robert MacIntyre pocketed $2,160,000 for finishing second with Rory McIlroy taking home $480,000.
