An American Airlines pilot has explained the reason why some seats on planes don’t recline – and it makes a lot of sense when you learn more about the policy
The golden age of comfortable air travel has long since departed, with numerous irritations now capable of turning journeys into ordeals. Among the most annoying issues are aircraft seats that appear to shrink with every trip, with some refusing to recline whatsoever.
For those who are confused as to why, one pilot has shared the reason behind this. Captain Steve, an American Airlines pilot, has revealed the two explanations behind this predicament – both of which are quite fascinating.
The captain has amassed a considerable TikTok following, with an impressive 220,000 users eager to discover the behind-the-scenes secrets of aviation.
In a recent TikTok post, Captain Steve unveiled the truth about these stubborn upright seats.
In his video, he explained: “You just got back into your seat, you’re all comfy, you built your little nest, you put all your electronics away, put all the stuff in the overhead compartment and you’re thinking to yourself, it’s time to relax, I’m going to recline my seat a little bit.
“So you push that button and the seat won’t recline, you push it again and it just won’t recline. You’re like ‘what in the world is going on?’
“It’s one of two things my friends. Either you’re up in the back row against the bulkhead and that seat isn’t going to recline. Why? Because there’s a wall behind you.
“And the other is you’re in front of an emergency exit row.”
Captain Steve explained why the seat in front of the exit row doesn’t recline, no matter how much you try.
He clarified: “Because we need to leave it in an unimpeded path out through that exit so people don’t stumble or fall, there’s nothing that impedes their progress.
“On many of those seats, there’s not even a tray table, so the bloke sitting in the exit row doesn’t have a tray table. It comes out of the compartment next to him.”
Captain Steve emphasised that this is purely for passenger safety. So while it may be irritating during flights, it really is for your own good.
Many social media users lauded Captain Steve for shedding light on this lesser-known rule, with the video garnering numerous likes and comments.
One commented: “Wow, now that is a new one.” Meanwhile, another added: “Love this bloke, I learn so much!”
