Manchester United’s all-time leading goal scorer has been cheering his son Kai on during his visit to the north coast this week
Wayne Rooney has been enjoying the local landmarks around the north coast ahead of his son Kai’s SuperCupNI final with Manchester United.
The Red Devils all-time leading scoring and his wife Colleen have spent the week in the Coleraine area watching Kai and his teammates in the Premier section of the youth football tournament.
Rooney was part of the Everton team which played in the tournament back in 2000 but now his son can go one better than him and come home with a winners medal if they can get past Southampton at Coleraine Showgrounds this evening.
For Rooney senior the trip back to the Causeway Coast has brought the memories of 25 years ago flooding back.
Speaking earlier this week Rooney said: “Some of the greatest memories I’ve had is, is going away in tournaments, obviously coming over when it was the Milk Cup and going to Dallas, going to Holland, to Switzerland, some of the tournaments we went to, and they were, you know, great memories which, as a young lad, you’re around your teammates, you don’t want to be around your parents when you when you’re 15 and the time you’re around your teammates and you’re going out and doing different things.”
Rooney has made the most of the break and on Friday he visited Curry’s Amusements in Portrush, formerly Barry’s.
He made young fans Hal, Leo, Emmet and Shea Finnegan’s day by posing for a selfie in he iconic seaside venue.
The former England captain has made time for all the fans this week along with Michael Carrick, whose son Jacey is also playing for United.
Both of the former Old Trafford favourites are set to be in attendance at The Showgrounds this evening for the showpiece final against the Saints. Kick-off is 8pm.
