Former Coronation Street star Millie Gibson is set to appear in a brand new period drama this autumn

Former Coronation Street star Millie Gibson looks worlds away from her ITV soap role in a “lavish” new costume drama.

A fresh adaptation of The Forsyte Saga is set to premiere on 5 (previously known as Channel 5) this autumn.

Drawing from the novels penned by John Galsworthy, the six-part series, titled The Forsytes, reacquaints viewers with the affluent stockbroker family, who are living a life of opulence at the end of the Victorian era.

“Sticklers for tradition and status, the older Forsytes prize duty and reputation above all else, whilst the younger members rail against the rigidity of family expectations,” the official synopsis reads, reports Leicestershire Live.

“The question of who will take over the family firm puts Soames Forsyte and his cousin Jolyon in conflict just as their lives are turned upside down by the arrival of two remarkable women.”

It concludes: “Ultimately, each Forsyte family member grapples with the same dilemma – is it better to be ruled by the head or the heart?”

Millie is set to portray dancer Irene Heron, who captures the heart of Soames (Joshua Orpin). A sneak peek photo which appears to depict their wedding day was unveiled earlier this year.

Now, 5 has shared brand new images of the forthcoming costume drama, with the former Corrie actress looking dramatically different from her previous roles as Kelly Neelan in the soap and Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who.

In character, Millie sports red hair, a stark contrast to her well-known blonde tresses.

She can be seen donning a cream frock adorned with a subtle floral motif, while Joshua Orpin cuts a smart figure in a suit that complements her outfit, complete with an olive waistcoat.

First-look snaps have also been released of Stephen Moyer as Jolyon Forsyte Sr., Jack Davenport as James Forsyte, Danny Griffin as Jo Forsyte Jr., Tuppence Middleton as Frances Forsyte, and Eleanor Tomlinson as Louisa Byrne.

Upon the series’ initial announcement, Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor of Drama at 5, said in a statement: “We are excited to give The Forsytes its UK home on 5. This lavish new adaptation is a great addition to our rich portfolio of period dramas.

“With a stellar cast, stunning production, and rich ensemble of characters, it has all the components our audience loves.”

The Forsytes is set to premiere on 5 later this autumn. Coronation Street airs at 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX
