Volunteers and emergency services personnel on scene “within minutes”
A fast acting rescue operation after someone ended up in the River Lagan on Friday has “undoubtedly” saved them from serious injury, volunteers say.
Details of the late night rescue were posted online by the Community Rescue Service along with an image of rescue volunteers and NIFRS personnel and PSNI at the shoreline next to the ‘Big Fish’ in Belfast city centre.
A Facebook post outlining the details of the operation said: “At 22.40 last night Emergency Response Teams from CRS were tasked to a serious incident where a person was in difficulties in the River Lagan near Belfast City Centre. CRS Teams were on scene both on land and water within minutes and alongside PSNI the person was recovered from the water into a CRS Rescue Boat where they were initially treated for water immersion injuries and other injuries.
“We were joined by our colleagues from NIFRS and NIAS who were of great assistance in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the casualty. The quick response undoubtedly saved the person in difficulties from further serious injury.”
CRS Regional Commander Sean Mc Carry said: “These Multi Agency Emergency Responses which are based on close cooperation and mutual understanding following many years of interagency working are saving lives on a weekly basis. I cannot praise all of those involved highly enough for their professionalism and dedication which ensured that yet again today we have another person back safely with those who love and care for them.”
