North Belfast security alert latest as man charged with number of offences

A man has been charged with a number of offences following a security alert in North Belfast.

The alert in the Victoria Parade area of the New Lodge on August 22 lasted for two days, with residents being forced to evacuate the area. A number of suspected explosive devices and firearms were removed from a property in the area.

Police have now issued an update, confirming that a 34-year-old man has been charged to court on a number of offences.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Serious Crime Branch have charged a man to court following his arrest on Friday, 22nd August in north Belfast.

“The 34-year-old man has been charged with a number of offences including possessing articles for use in terrorism, threats to kill, possession of explosives with intent to endanger life, possessing explosives in suspicious circumstances and a number of firearm related offences.

“He is due to appear before Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 4th September. As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
