Landlord and housing association fined after illegal eviction in East Belfast

The tenant was unlawfully locked out of their home for a period of time

A landlord and a housing association have been fined after being convicted of illegally evicting a woman from her East Belfast home.

Asherwoods Housing Association and one of its directors Maurice Dawson were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 2, of unlawfully locking a woman from her property on Kirkliston Drive between June 26, 2023 and July 3, 2023.

The housing association and landlord were each fined £750 and order to pay £198 by the court.

Belfast City Council has said the ruling shows the legal protections that tenants have and what can happen if they are breached.

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: “This ruling highlights that legal protections are in place for tenants. Landlords must be aware of tenants’ rights.”
