Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley have announced they are going their separate ways following 13 years of marriage.

The revelation emerges amid earlier worries from fans that the pair might find it difficult to balance their contrasting work commitments when Cat and presenting partner Ben Shephard replaced Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on ITV’s This Morning.

Reports have even suggested that Cat and Patrick were leading independent lives prior to their surprising separation being revealed on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, last September, comedian Patrick, who presents RTE’s The Late Late Show which records in Dublin, dismissed suggestions that the television personalities were finding it hard to make time for one another, maintaining they had established a schedule that suited them and their two boys, Milo, nine, and James, seven.

When questioned by The Times about whether the pair were like “ships passing in the night”, Patrick refuted this “because Cat’s doing her stuff in the morning, she would normally be back just after lunchtime”.

The entertainer continued: “And we’ve got the start of the week and the weekends together, so it’s not ‘Hi/bye’.”

While offering an optimistic perspective during the chat, Patrick also recognised that the duo experienced a “tricky” spell when Cat needed to record So You Think You Can Dance in the US for seven weeks.

He remembered: “There was a moment after Christmas that was tricky, when Cat’s show [So You Think You Can Dance] came back in America, and she had to fly to Atlanta for seven weeks.

“There was a wee bit of a juggle there. But I think with all these things, as long as you have a routine, it doesn’t take as much fizz out of you as some people think.”

Just a few months following Patrick’s remarks, he and Cat have confirmed their split.

In a joint statement issued to the PA news agency, they said: “We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved.

“We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.”

Before their announcement, the pair had relocated their family from Los Angeles to London in 2023, with Patrick travelling back and forth to Dublin for his role on The Late Late Show. This came after spending 15 years living in America.

They hadn’t been spotted together publicly for more than a year though, and Cat was also absent from Patrick’s mother’s funeral in March.

At the time, a spokesperson informed the Mirror that Cat had stayed home to look after their sons, saying: “Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day.”
