Man charged to court as PSNI officer suffers serious hand injury in alleged assault

The charges include obstructing police, resisting police, disorderly behaviour, common assault, criminal damage, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation.

A man is due to appear in court today after being charged with a number of offences following an incident that left a police officer with a serious hand injury.

Police were called to reports of an “aggresive male” in the Galliagh Park area of Derry on Saturday, November 29, with a man later being arrest.

Following the arrest, it was alleged that the man and a police officer were involved in an incident that left the officer with a serious hand injury that required hospital treatment.

A 31-year-old man has since been charged with a number of offences, which include obstructing police, resisting police, disorderly behaviour, common assault, criminal damage, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation.

He is due to appear at Derry Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 1.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “A 31-year-old man arrested after a police officer sustained a serious hand in Derry/Londonderry on Saturday, 29th November in the Galliagh Park area has been charged to court.

“He has been charged with obstructing police, resisting police, disorderly behaviour and common assault. “Other charges include criminal damage, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation. “The man is due to appear before Derry Magistrates’ Court this morning, Monday 1st December. “As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
