Police say the driver ‘crashed at speed’ into ‘an innocent member of the public’
A “reckless” driver has been arrested after “crashing at speed” into another vehicle when driving away from a police checkpoint after making a U-turn.
Officers from the Ballymoney and Moyle Neighbourhood Policing Team set up a vehicle checkpoint on the Garron Road in Glenariff on Sunday, November 30, where they stopped motorists to check they were licensed, insured and fit to be on the roads.
They noticed a vehicle approaching the checkpoint and making a U-turn, which was suspicious to the officers, who then followed the vehicle, which was later found to be uninsured. However, as the driver was driving away from the checkpoint, they “crashed at speed” into an “innocent member of the public”, causing extensive damage to both cars.

The driver was then arrested on suspicion of Dangerous Driving, No Insurance and Possession of a Class B controlled drug and has since been charged to court.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “You never know what’s around the bend! “This afternoon, Officers from Ballymoney and Moyle Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) conducted patrols across the district. “A simple Vehicle Check Point (VCP) was set up on the Garron Road in Glenariff to stop and check all motorists were licensed, insured and fit to be on the roads. As Officers were dealing with a motorist, they sighted a vehicle making a quick U-turn in the road to avoid them. “This is a massive red flag for the Police, so as a result, the Police stopped their VCP and attempted to catch up to the vehicle to get its vehicle registration and identify the driver. Unbeknownst to the Police, the driver was uninsured, which could have easily been dealt with at the roadside. Instead, this reckless driver crashed at speed into an innocent member of the Public causing extensive damage to both cars. Thankfully we can report that no major injuries occurred. “This young driver was subsequently removed from the vehicle, cautioned and interviewed for Dangerous Driving, No Insurance and Possession of a Class B controlled drug. He will now have to face his day in court!”
