Line of Duty fans couldn’t help but feel “disappointed” when H’s identity was revealed in season six.

Line of Duty fans have been asking about the true identity of H following confirmation that the critically acclaimed BBC series would be making a comeback.

It’s been four years since viewers last witnessed AC-12 pursuing and bringing down bent coppers, but the story isn’t finished yet as a seventh series has now been given the green light.

With Adrian Dunbar reprising his role as Superintendent Ted Hastings, Vicky McClure returning as Kate Fleming and Martin Compston back as Steve Arnott, production for the upcoming series is scheduled to commence in Belfast during spring 2026.

However, Line of Duty fans have redirected their focus to what many assumed was the concluding series from 2021.

Who is H in Line of Duty?

The sixth series brought all storylines together as AC-12 pursued H, which represented a network of high-ranking bent police officers who wielded considerable power over the Organised Crime Syndicate.

They were eliminated one by one, beginning with DI Matthew “Dot” Cottan (Craig Parkinson), then ACC Derek Hilton (Paul Higgins), before Senior Legal Counsel Gill Biggelo (Polly Walker) followed.

However, it emerged in the most recent series that a “Fourth Man” completed the corrupt network, revealed to be DSU Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle).

Having appeared in Line of Duty from the first series, Buckells was regarded as the office’s incompetent buffoon, so when his true nature was revealed, viewers were thoroughly disappointed with the revelation.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, at the time, someone exclaimed: “All that suspense for flipping Buckells.”

While another wrote: “Six seasons only to announce H is Buckells. I’m crying.”

A fellow fan added on Reddit: “Everyone is so disappointed but I saw this coming.

“A massive build up and then using the most stupid person in the show.”

It remains unclear whether the matter of Buckells being revealed as H will be tackled in series seven, though its storyline has been disclosed.

When the fresh series kicks off, viewers will discover that AC-12 has been dissolved and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards.

Anti-corruption operations have grown increasingly challenging when Steve, Kate and Ted are assigned their most delicate case.

Charismatic officer Detective Inspector Dominic Gough stands accused of being a sexual predator, exploiting his position of authority following his successful takedown of numerous organised crime networks.

But do the allegations against Gough hold water, or is there more beneath the surface?

Line of Duty is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
