The Usual Suspects star Gabriel Byrne appeared on Friday night’s show

Gabriel Byrne captivated audiences as he appeared alongside host Patrick Kielty on Friday night’s Late Late Show.

The Usual Suspects actor spoke candidly about his remarkable career in film, whilst also discussing his keen interest in politics – and whether he might ever contemplate making the leap into political life himself.

Gabriel chatted about politics at home and in the US, and Patrick asked: “Were you ever tempted yourself to go down the political route?”

“I could never belong to a party,” Gabriel responded. “I really, truly couldn’t sit there and listen to somebody generalise about the reality of life. I think that the older I get, the more I value independence.

“I really do believe in independent bookshops, independent coffee shops, independent clothes shops, anywhere there’s independence, and it’s not a monolithic chain. I don’t want to go to Lapland and get the same coffee that I do in Offaly. I want to go to a place where there’s a guy working behind a counter that I can look at and say, this is his business.”, reports RSVP Live.

“These monolith companies have taken so much of what belongs to us. They’ve take over our lives in the most subtle way and now it’s almost impossible to fight back against them.”

Viewers loved the interesting interview as they took to social media to praise him.

One viewer took to social media to express: “Gabriel Byrne is such a superb commentator and brilliant analyst of what is happening in global politics and in society. What a great interview by @PatricKielty in allowing @gabriel_byrne_ to give superb insights on so many topics without interruption.

“Fair play Gabriel Byrne,” another penned.

A third said: “Could genuinely listen to Gabriel Byrne all night long. Such an articulate man who speaks so much sense!”.

“Gabriel Byrne. What a great interview. A fantastic ambassador for Ireland. Very honest and open in his opinions too about how Ireland is now. I loved Into The West too. A poignant classic Irish movie. Was lucky to meet him once too. Lovely man,” another wrote.

Another commented: “The Late Late is good tonight. Gabriel Byrne spoke well and gets it. And Carrie Crowley is eternally gorgeous. I still have a grá.”
