The Republic of Ireland are set to face Hungary in Budapest, knowing that a victory will secure them at least a World Cup play-off spot following their impressive 2-0 triumph over Portugal.
Troy Parrott was the hero of the night, scoring twice as Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in a thrilling encounter at the Aviva Stadium. Ireland’s final World Cup qualifier is against Hungary this weekend, with hopes high for another memorable win.
Hungary, having defeated Armenia 1-0 in Yerevan ahead of Ireland’s clash with Portugal, must have felt they were on the brink of reaching the play-off round for next summer’s tournament. However, everything is still up for grabs in Budapest, with the two teams previously playing out a 2-2 draw in Dublin on matchday one back in September.
In that game, Ireland managed to claw back from a two-goal deficit to secure a point, thanks to goals from Evan Ferguson and a last-minute equaliser from Adam Idah, reports the Irish Mirror.

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson: “We wanted to go for the last game and still have a chance, and we have that now.
“So what a moment for us, even talking after the game against Armenia, when things didn’t look well, to have this chance now.
“It’s in our hands to qualify for the next round, and after this performance, I think there’s a lot of positivity in that performance we did, but now we just need to get all the energy back.
“That’s the prime focus now, is to regain as much energy as we can for that second game in Hungary.”
