Wizz Air has announced plans to train 1,200 new pilots by 2028, with a number of those recruits to come from Ireland. The training programme, which can be fully funded, is open to applicants with no prior flying experience, making it one of the most accessible pathways into commercial aviation.

People across Ireland are being given the opportunity to train as airline pilots for free, with potential salaries reaching up to £200,000.

For the first time, one of Europe’s rapidly expanding airlines is conducting a dedicated recruitment drive in Ireland. This offers both aspiring aviators and those considering a career change the chance to take flight. Wizz Air has unveiled plans to train 1,200 new pilots by 2028, with a portion of these recruits expected to come from Ireland.

The training programme, which can be fully funded, is open to applicants with no prior flying experience, making it one of the most accessible pathways into commercial aviation. Successful candidates will undergo a six-month selection process before embarking on two years of rigorous training to become qualified pilots.

During their training, participants will earn around £40,000 (€46,000), increasing to £60,000 (€69,000) after qualification. After gaining two years of flying experience, salaries can escalate to £90,000 (€103,000), and potentially rise to as much as £200,000 (€230,000) upon promotion to captain, reports the Irish Mirror.

The airline states that the programme presents a “unique opportunity” for those seeking a career change to join one of Europe’s largest and most sustainable carriers.

Speaking about the new initiative, Captain Phil Cullen, Head of Operations for the airline’s UK division, said: “Our commitment to training 1200 new pilots, within the Wizz Air Group, by 2028 represents a major investment in the future of aviation and the UK’s economic landscape.

“We’re particularly excited to expand our recruitment efforts into Ireland for the first time, and to open the door for people seeking a career change. Wizz Air is proud to offer clear career progression and industry-leading support to all of our pilots, from training through to Captain.”

The scheme arrives as the carrier pushes forward with its significant European expansion, aiming to operate 500 aircraft by 2030.
