His try just before the half-hour had put Ireland 17-0 ahead and well on the way to victory against Japan
Nick Timoney has a try-to-game strike rate in an Ireland shirt worth shouting from the rooftops – five from five! The latest addition came at the Aviva against Japan, reacting first to a dropped ball near the Japan 22, scooped up and popped on by James Ryan and, spotting the way to the line, haring diagonally towards the corner flag to touch down. Taken in after 51 minutes it was, all in all, a decent effort from the Ulster player. He reflected: “There were probably elements in the first half that didn’t go 100 per cent to plan but I think our ability to maintain composure and finish the game out quite strongly was pleasing. “I certainly enjoyed myself, I felt lucky to be back in a green jersey and honoured so I was determined to enjoy it as best I could and I felt like I went fairly well.” Timoney’s try just before the half-hour had put Ireland 17-0 ahead. “James Ryan wants to make sure he’s getting his credit for the offload to put me through. Certainly the ball was in play a lot, a few times the structure of the game seemed to fall down a bit just because balls were down and people were reacting and stuff. “But when someone goes forward like that, like James did, gets a few metres, gets his hands free, that can always lead to something dangerous, so I was lucky to be on the end of it.” The openside first played for Ireland in 2021 and his game has been evolving since. “I’d say I’m fairly different. I would say I’m a bit more settled, a bit more mature, definitely,” he said. “I’d say if you asked Andy and he’d tell you honestly, I’d say he probably thought I was maybe a bit desperate for it all a few years ago when I first came in. “Not that I’m not as enthusiastic as ever, but I think. I just have a better, more measured approach to it now, and I hope that I’m a more consistent, better player because of that.”
