The 2018 event will live long in the memory
Ireland’s recent mild conditions are set to be replaced with “sharp frosts, ice and wintry falls”, with experts even warning that weather patterns could mirror 2018’s Beast from the East.
The last few weeks have seen unusually mild weather for this time of year. However, forecasters are now predicting a significant change, with a cold spell expected from later next week.
The popular Donegal Weather channel said: “There have been some background signals the past week that we might experience something colder after mid-November, with an interesting European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model run this morning showing somewhat colder conditions moving into the second last week of November.”
Founder and weather watcher Kenneth McDonagh cautioned that this weather pattern would bring “sharp frosts, ice and wintry falls, especially to northwestern and northern areas with a “cold, bitter” northerly airflow.”
He added: “The ECMWF model is also showing a sudden stratospheric warming with zonal winds showing a weakening into later November /early December, which can favour much colder set-ups.
“Generally, when a sudden stratospheric warming happens, it affects surface weather around three to six weeks later, like we saw back in 2018 from the Beast from the East, which we were able to forecast around three weeks out from that event.”
Kenneth isn’t alone in forecasting this cold snap. Nick Critch from Weather Alerts Ireland has warned: “A change is on the charts, both the Global Forecast System and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts are forecasting a cold spell from later next week.”
In addition, an aurora alert has been issued, urging people to keep their eyes peeled this morning. This stunning cosmic display could potentially last until tonight.
Kenneth added: “A G3 Storm warning is now in place, Coronal Mass Ejection arrives to earth at 5:17am. The expected CME has arrived in the last hour with a Geomagnetic impulse detected sudden.
“The solar wind speed is now above 800km/sec with storming likely over the next few hours, potentially lasting into tonight.”
