Thousands will gather in cities and towns to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

This Remembrance Sunday, cities and towns across Northern Ireland will fall silent to honour the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

It’s a moment to remember members of the Armed Forces and their families and the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

Thousands of veterans proudly wearing their medals, military families and the public will gather in remembrance of all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The National Service of Remembrance to honour the nation’s war dead, held at The Cenotaph in London’s Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, will be attended by King Charles and members of the royal family.

In Belfast First Minister Michelle O’Neill will once again attend the official Remembrance Sunday ceremony at City Hall this weekend and lay a wreath at the Cenotaph. Last November, Ms O’Neill became the first senior Sinn Fein figure to take part in such an event in Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile Taoiseach Micheál Martin is expected to attend this weekend’s Remembrance Sunday service in Enniskillen where he will lay a wreath at the town’s war memorial.

Here’s a round up of some of the Remembrance Sunday services taking place across NI this weekend:

Belfast

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly, will lay a wreath at the cenotaph in the Garden of Remembrance at City Hall, on behalf of the citizens of Belfast, after a short ceremony at 11am.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony in the Garden of Remembrance. Other representatives and VIPs will also be in attendance including First Minister Michelle O’Neill, who is set to attend a Remembrance Sunday event in Belfast for the second year.

Michelle O’Neill first attended the Remembrance Sunday event in 2024, where she laid a laurel wreath at the Cenotaph.

Co Derry and Tyrone

A series of events are planned across counties Derry and Tyrone on Sunday to mark the 107th anniversary of the armistice that ended WWI.

Between 8.45am and 9.15am, a service and wreath laying ceremony will take place at the War Memorial on Derry Road in Strabane.

In Newtownstewart, between 9.30am and 10.30am, there will be a wreath laying ceremony and parade. The parade leaves from Dublin Street at 9.30am. The return parade is from 12noon to 12.30pm.

From 9.35am to 10.45am, there will be a parade leaving from Iona Terrace in the Waterside, via Spencer Road along Craigavon Bridge to The Diamond for a wreath laying service. The return parade is scheduled for 11.30am-12.30pm.

At 10.40am, there is a parade from Bonds Street, making its way towards Lincoln Court for An Act of Remembrance and will make its way back to Bonds Street.

In Donemana, there will be a parade leaving at 2.30pm from Allen Park. The return parade is scheduled for 4pm.

Co Fermanagh

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is expected to attend Sunday’s Remembrance Day service in Enniskillen to continue a tradition started in 2012 – but missed in 2024.

It comes a year after his predecessor Simon Harris broke the tradition started by Enda Kenny in 2012 and did not attend with Heather Humphries, who recently contested the Irish Presidential Election, attending in his place.

Mr Kenny became the first Taoiseach to attend a Remembrance Day service in Northern Ireland when he took part in commemorations at Enniskillen in 2012, in a move seen as symbolic of greater recognition afforded in the Republic of Ireland to Irishmen who fought and died serving in the British Army in the First World War.

His attendance also marked the 25th anniversary of an IRA bombing at the memorial in 1987. The tradition has been followed almost every year since Mr Kenny placed a laurel wreath at the base of the memorial.

A large crowd is expected to line out in Belmore Street in the Co Fermanagh town on Sunday morning for the annual Act of Remembrance Ceremony at the Cenotaph. A short ecumenical service will start at 10.50am incorporating the four main churches in Enniskillen. The two-minute silence will then commence at 11am.

Co Down

The Ards and North Down Borough Council, Remembrance Sunday Parade (conducted by the RBL Bangor Branch) will be held this Sunday, November 9 at the War Memorial, Ward Park.

Those marching in the parade should start to assemble at 10am at the Community hub, Hamilton Road, Bangor. The parade will form up at 10.30am and step off at 10.40am, and spectators should be at the War Memorial no later than 10.40am.

After the act of Remembrance the parade will march through Bangor returning to Hamilton Road.

Co Antrim

A series of Remembrance services and parades will be held across Mid and East Antrim this weekend to honour those who gave their lives in conflict.

Ceremonies will take place at War Memorials in Ballymena, Carrickfergus, and Larne, with further commemorations planned in Ballycarry, Broughshane, Cullybackey, Glynn, Kells and Connor, and Whitehead.

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, and Interim Chief Executive, Valerie Watts, will be among those attending the Ballymena service, where they will lay a wreath on behalf of the Council, while Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tyler Hoey, will lay a wreath in Larne.
