A man was helping a friend to replace some skirting boards in their home when they stumbled across a cryptic note that had been hidden away for nearly 20 years

A man has been left baffled by a cryptic note he stumbled upon whilst giving his home a makeover. Speaking on his behalf, his friend detailed how they were replacing some skirting boards when they unearthed something unexpected.

He shared on Reddit: “[We] found this strange message on one of the boards. Does anyone know this is referring to? I thought it might be song lyrics but google is showing no results.”

Scribbled on a piece of timber, the note read: “If you were me and I were you and in this world there was just we two and if you were sure that no one knew, I would! Would you?”.

The note was dated May 2007, meaning it had been tucked away for nearly two decades before someone finally discovered it.

Sharing their own peculiar finds, one person said: “I have a load of weird things I found when I bought my house from one of those ‘Hoarders from Hell’ that you see on TV.”, reports the Mirror.

“Although the house was cleared when we got the keys, the garden certainly wasn’t in which I found many, many strange things.

“The weirdest thing however was when I stripped the wallpaper off the walls in the second bedroom (the most recently decorated room of the house but at a rough guess was at least 15 years ago), was a list of men’s names written on the bare plaster with marker pen.

“The strange thing was these men were all given scores. I’m not quite sure what these scores were for but according to neighbours in the close there hasn’t been a woman living in this house since the previous owners mum died over 30 years ago.

“I sort of regret that I never took a photo, but to be honest by the time I discovered this I was neck deep with a whole house renovation that had already drained me to the point I was ready to give up.”

Another user added: “In 2007 we decorated our loft rooms of our Victorian house and behind the wallpaper was a very carefully painted mural to Geoff Hurst and the 1966 world cup win.

“Obviously done by an enthusiastic teenager. It looked pretty good and gave me a chuckle when I papered over it for a few generations to come.

“When I took up the four layers of carpet on my first house, a 1928 semi, there was 1928 newspapers. Yorkshire ones.

“They were awesome. I stored them In plastic. They had fantastic letters pages. Grumpy old men talking about how women should know their place.

“[There was] also complaints about the police, crime and the rise of the ‘outrageous’ number of cars.

“There was adverts for all sorts of weird products. I really really wish I still had them. Funny how people were ranting in public, just back then they had to put pen to paper, wait a few days for each reply.”
