Belfast’s newest lunch spot left me full yet still hungry to revisit

A new and fresh food spot has landed in Belfast, and I had to try it out

When I heard about a new Canadian food offering landing right in the heart of Belfast I had to give it a go.

The Dep is the brainchild of the owners of the well-known food truck Oui Poutine so I went into this with high hopes. It has set up shop in a hatch which is based in The Flaxx right outside Sweet Afton.

The Flaxx was set up in 2023 but until recently had been vacant so seeing someone take the space is great to see. There is also ample seating here too which will be great in the warmer months. I couldn’t brave it at this time of year though.

This spot has a simple offering with items including pancakes, granola pots and pastries. The lunch menu consisted of 2 items which were a smoked brisket sandwich and poutine. There is also a ‘tuck shop’ on site that offers a range of drinks as well as sweet treats. You could also pick up some barbecue and hot jerk honey if you were in the market while picking up your lunch.

What I ordered:

I went for the pulled brisket sandwich which was smoked beef between two pieces of soft bread and some mustard to top it off. I also went for the small poutine because I thought the large might be a little too much for me at lunch.

What we liked:

I’ll start with the main character of this order and that was the sandwich. The beef here was cooked to perfection, the Canadians really seem to know what they’re at here. It had a great blend of flavours and it was falling apart the minute I lifted it which was a great sign.

Next up was the poutine and as I mentioned earlier I went for the small but a large was available. Again, this was a great size for a ‘small’. The chips here were cooked really well. I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to how chips are cooked and these passed even my strict tests. This was my first experience of poutine and I really loved it. It was really warming with the perfect balance of gravy to cheese in my opinion.

What we didn’t like/would change:

I struggled to eat the sandwich due to the sheer size and just how soft the bread was so it didn’t stay together at all. So this is more of a recommendation than anything – pick up a knife and fork for this one because you’ll need it.

Cost:

Everything I ordered came to £18.50. This is absolutely on the pricier side when you look at it like that. However, if I was to go back I probably wouldn’t order both together as this is definitely a massive lunch.

I love to see something new and fresh arriving in Belfas,t especially taking a space that needed a little love. The Dep is offering something unique here and it’s definitely a hearty lunch which is welcome as we head into the colder months. I will almost certainly be back for that poutine!
