Newtownabbey suspected murder victim named locally as young mother of two

Mother of two Mary McAdorey died at her home in Newtownabbey on Sunday October 12

The suspected murder of a young mother of two has sent a wave of shock and sadness across Belfast as a man remains in police custody on suspicion of murder.

Police attended a flat in the Old Mill Drive area of Newtownabbey on Sunday, October 12, following reports of a suspicious death, with a murder investigation later being launched.

The victim has been named locally as Mary McAdorey, a mother of two in her 20s. A 40-year-old man arrested on suspicion of her murder remains in police custody at this time.

Following Mary’s death, there has been an outpouring of grief on social media for the young mum and sharing thoughts and prayers for her two young children.

Sinn Fein Newtownabbey councillor Taylor McGrann told Belfast Live he was in the area this morning supporting local residents following the tragic news and said the entire community is in shock.

The councillor said that his heart goes out to the family and friends of the young woman at this sad time.

He said: “Absolutely tragic situation in our community, the whole community is in shock.

“My heart goes out to the family and friend circle of the young woman who has been killed. “I understand a 40-year-old man has been arrested.

“My thoughts are with the family of the woman at this sad time.”

North Belfast Alliance MLA Nuala McAllister said: “Very distressing news emerging from Newtownabbey over the past 24 hours with yet another young woman in Northern Ireland losing her life. My thoughts and sympathies are with the victim’s family and friends.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives investigating a report of a suspicious death in the Old Mill Drive area of Newtownabbey have this evening, Sunday 12th October, made an arrest.

“One man, aged 40, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

“He remains in custody at this time, assisting with police enquiries.

“Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in Newtownabbey’s Old Mill Drive.“Enquiries are ongoing and a further update will be provided in due course.”
