In addition to this incident, Jamie Love was also given a two-year conditional discharge for a charge of child cruelty.
A “violent offender” who attacked a taxi driver was handed a three-year sentence today (Monday).
Jamie Love (25) from Sloane Crescent in Killyleagh was sentenced at Belfast Crown Court by Judge Gordon Kerr KC who divided the term equally between custody and supervised licence.
In addition to this incident, Love was also given a two-year conditional discharge for a charge of child cruelty.
Belfast Crown Court heard that on February 12, 2023, Love assaulted a taxi driver, and when police were called to the scene, they observed the wounded driver covered in blood.
Judge Kerr said the taxi driver was “providing a public service” and was “entitled to the court’s protection.”
Love subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He also accepted his guilt regarding charge of child cruelty which occurred on July 20, 2021.
On that date, a member of the public raised concerns regarding the drunken behaviour of Love and a female towards the child.
Judge Kerr noted “the child is now safe and the defendant has no access to the child.”
Before he passed sentence, Judge Kerr said he had considered Love’s criminal record which includes several prior violent offences.
Noting that Love is “facing some serious charges in the future”, the Judge added: “It’s perfectly clear that this man has a tendency to be a violent offender.”
Judge Kerr imposed a three-year sentence for the assault on the taxi driver.
Revealing that he previously imposed a two-year conditional discharge on Love’s co-accused regarding the child cruelty charge, Judge Kerr said: “I see no reason in the circumstances of this case why I shouldn’t make the same order.”
