Staff and students have said goodbye to a legend

After an extraordinary 57 years of dedicated service, a Co Antrim school this week paid a fond farewell to a beloved and wonderful science technician.

Mervyn Higginson has been praised for his unwavering commitment, steady presence, and relentless smile that have been the backbone of Ballyclare Secondary School’s science department for generations.

From Bunsen burners to biology slides, he supported countless experiments, inspired curiosity, and ensured that every student had the tools to explore the wonders of science.

To mark his retirement, the school held a special assembly with some of his family present.

A school spokesperson said: “Mervyn has been a fantastic support and an integral member of our Science Department. Thank you Mervyn for your decades of dedication and your tireless work behind the scenes.

“You’ve made Ballyclare Secondary School a better place, and your impact will be felt for many years to come. Wishing you a retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and well-earned adventures!”
