More than 500 pedestrians injured in Northern Ireland road accidents over past year

A third of children killed or seriously injured in accidents over the past year were pedestrians

More than 500 pedesterians have been injured in road accidents across Northern Ireland over the past year, figures have shown.

When a pedestrian is injured on the road, the police assign a severity to that injury, ranging from slight to serious and then fatal. Between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, more than 548 pedestrians have been injured in road crashes, including ten fatalities in that time.

In 2022/23, the PSNI recorded 574 pedestrian injuries with 18 fatalities, before this figure rose to 618 casualties with 17 fatalities a year later. The figures over the past year show a decrease in pedestrian injurries and a fall in fatalities compared to recent years.

Across the UK, five people die every day on the roads, while 80 are seriously injured. The latest figures were obtained by Accident Claims Advice through a Freedom of Information requst to the PSNI.

Road Traffic Accident Manager for JF Law, Tracey Chick, said: “Each road traffic incident involving pedestrians represents a moment of distress and potential life-altering consequences for those involved.

“If you have been involved in an accident, your safety should be the immediate priority, before exchanging details with the other involved parties, and reporting the incident to the police.”

Looking at the overall breakdown of road collision casualties by road user type in Northern Ireland, drivers of motor vehicles account for the largest proportion of casualties (55.2%). This is followed by passengers (29.6%), pedestrians (7.2%), motorcyclists (3.9%) and pedal cyclists (2.8%). These are broadly similar to the percentages for each group seen in 2023/24.

In terms of child casualties on our roads over the past year, nearly three-quarters (74.7%) were passengers while nearly a third (32.4%) of children killed or seriously injured were pedestrians.
