Anthony Boyle is famed for his roles in Say Nothing and The White House but the Belfast actor is now the star of a Netflix drama and he revealed how he irked producers on the final day

The lead actor in House of Guinness confessed that he left “producers raging” distracting crew members on the final day of filming.

Anthony Boyle, who is from Belfast, plays head of the family Arthur Guinness in the drama set in the 1860s. The show explores the “powerful and debaucherous” Guinness family while they are on the precipice of greatness.

Ahead of the release of the eight episodes on Netflix on Thursday (September 25), Anthony, famed for his role in Say Nothing, spoke to Patrick Keilty on The Late Late Show where he gave some behind the scenes insight.

Asked about his gesture towards the end of the production, he said: “The last day, a lot of actors get like ice cream trucks or coffee trucks and I got a Guinness truck to come to set up and it came a couple of hours early.

“It was meant to come at six when we wrapped but it came at lunch so there is a few scenes in the show where the cameras are all over the place because some of the boys were absolutely steaming.”

Laughing, Anthony continued: “The producers were raging but it was good craic.” Anthony plays a gay man in the show who takes charge of the now world famous Guinness brewery, and he offered a glimpse into the mindset of the character.

He said: “He would be much more interested in s****ing fellas, drinking Guinness and having the craic in London but he has to come over and sort of pretend to be straight because of the time he is in and run the brewery because at that time if you were gay, you got about 20 years hard labour, so it was essentially a death sentence.”

With this in mind, Arthur entered into a marriage of convenience and House of Guinness, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, tells the “epic story inspired by one of Europe’s most famous and enduring dynasties”.

Last week, Anthony appeared at a special screening of episode one in Dublin where he spoke to Belfast Live about relishing the whole experience.

He said: “It was good craic. It was a real joy to take the role and to do it. It was great to grow a moustache that looked like the Pringles man. I just had a lot of fun doing it.”

As for the best pint of Guinness in Belfast, he added: “You’re looking at like the PD in Andytown or maybe like Madden’s or Kelly’s [Cellars] in the town.”
