Two men charged in investigation into attempted murder of DCI John Caldwell

Two men have been charged in the investigation into the attempted murder of DCI John Cladwell.

The senior police officer was shot in front of his son and seriously injured in a dissident gun attack at a sports complex in Omagh in February 2023.

Police have previously said the attack was carried out by a joint enterprise between dissident republicans and an organised crime group.

The two men, arrested under the Terrorism Act on Monday, have been charged with Preparation of Terrorist Acts and Perverting the Course of Justice.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Serious Crime Branch, investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh in February 2023, have charged two men to court.

“The charges follow their arrests and subsequent detention under the Terrorism Act on Monday, 11th August. “A 45-year-old man, arrested in the Stewartstown area and a man aged 25, arrested in west Belfast, have both been charged with the Preparation of Terrorist Acts and Perverting the Course of Justice. “They are due to appear at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning, Wednesday, 13th August. As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service”
