A Co Armagh footballer has spoken of his pride at being named captain of Bolton Wanderers for the 2025/16 season.

Eoin Toal joined the League One outfit from Derry City in 2022 and has made 105 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals.

The Northern Ireland international led the Whites out for Saturday’s season opener against Stockport County, but Steven Schumacher’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat at Edgeley Park with Malik Mothersille and Kyle Wootton scoring goals late in each half for the home side.

Bolton will be hoping for better fortune when they take on Plymouth Argyle in their first home game of the season at The Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Speaking to the club’s website, Toal said it was a privilege to be named club captain for the new campaign.

“It’s a proud moment,” he said.

“But it’s not just for myself, but for my family as well. It’s a real privilege and it’s something that I won’t be taking lightly.

“It is a real honour to be captain of this Football Club, it’s a massive club and a great fanbase and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”

With over 20,000 fans expected at Saturday’s home game, Toal is hoping they can pick up their first points of the new season.

“You’ve seen them at Stockport, right behind us from minute one and travelling in their numbers,” added the Grange native.

“We know that they do that everywhere we go, and they’re always there with us. Hopefully, they stick by us and bring good numbers again this weekend, which I know they will and continue getting behind us.

“We’ll look at the Stockport game, pick out what we need to sort out and take it into Saturday’s game. It’s one to look forward to.”
