The Naked Gun star played a guessing game on Late Night With Seth Meyers on past police officer roles
The Naked Gun star Liam Neeson has admitted he “jumped at the chance” to appear in Derry Girls, as the Ballymena man reflected on his past roles during an American TV appearance.
In an appearance on the Late Night With Seth Meyers TV talk show on American channel NBC, Neeson was presented with a series of still images taken from previous films where he’d portrayed a police officer and the former St Patrick’s College pupil was asked to name the show.
The Schindler’s List and Taken star performed admirably, correctly identifying the various performances from the still image alone – and he had no problem whatsoever identifying his character from the “terrific” Derry Girls.

In Derry Girls, he plays an RUC officer known as Chief Inspector Byers who makes his first appearance in a humourous scene after the girls are caught burgling their school while searching for their exam results. He also makes a more poignant cameo appearance in the series finale, when the RUC officer is portrayed mulling over his choice in the Good Friday Agreement referendum in 1998.
On his NBC appearance with Seth Meyers, the host reveals he is a “huge fan of Derry Girls” and described it as “a really special show.”
Meyers asked the Schindler’s List, Taken and The Naked Gun star if he’d “jumped at the chance to do something a little different” by joining the cast of the Channel Four and Netflix hit comedy.
Liam Neeson replied: “I did, I thought the show was terrific.”
The Northern Ireland acting great asked the host if he could “follow all the accents”, to which Meyers replied: “I could but I will admit, you know what, I do think my wife and I maybe watched it with subtitles – just to be a little safe, you know what I mean?”
The Naked Gun is out in cinemas and features Liam Neeson in the lead role alongside with Pamela Anderson in a supporting role in the comedy action film.
