Robbie Henshaw missed out on the recent British and Irish Lions tour after being selected for the previous two series, but the Ireland star is making the most of his summer
Robbie Henshaw, the Ireland rugby star, recently wowed patrons at a Mayo pub with an unexpected accordion performance, proving his skills aren’t confined to the rugby field.
Despite missing out on the latest British and Irish Lions tour, a selection he’s made twice before, Henshaw found a silver lining in being able to join friends for a stag do.
Captured in a video by Westport local Doherty’s, Henshaw is seen donning a Fred Flintstone costume while accompanying a singing mate, reports the Irish Mirror.
The pub expressed their excitement online: “We were thrilled to welcome Irish Rugby international and Leinster star Robbie Henshaw today – and who better to treat us to a few tunes on the box!”.
Henshaw’s musical prowess isn’t new to the limelight; he’s previously showcased his talents at the Fleadh with family and even faced a spontaneous challenge from Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty last year.
Reflecting on his musical journey in 2017 with Off The Ball, Henshaw shared: “I was more nervous about music than I was with a game. Music was at the heart. It kept us all together in Athlone.”
He added: “We’ve a big family and it kept us close to our cousins. When we meet up, we’d have sessions. Music was at the heart of that.”
Initially starting with the fiddle, Henshaw eventually gravitated towards the accordion, adding another string to his bow.
The Henshaw family, renowned for their exceptional traditional music, joined forces with folk icon Sharon Shannon to launch their own album, ‘The Secret Sessions’, in 2018.
The proceeds from this venture were generously donated to the South Westmeath Hospice.
