A court heard the former World No1 was allegedly doing 60mph in a 30mph zone

Northern Ireland snooker ace Mark Allen has been warned by a judge he is “considering disqualification” after hearing the star was allegedly caught doing twice the limit in a built-up area.

Papers lodged at Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, accuse the 39-year-old of driving with excess speed on 8 July this year.

Defence counsel Grant Powles asked for the case to be adjourned for a week to allow Allen’s solicitors to take instruction.

When District Judge Nigel Broderick asked what the alleged speed is, a prosecuting lawyer confirmed “it’s 60 in a 30.”

Adjourning the case for a week “for attitude,” the judge warned that if there is a guilty plea, “I’m considering disqualification…that’s double the limit.”

Putting the case back to November 4, Judge Broderick said the defence should “take their client’s instructions on possible disqualification.”

The Antrim left-hander turned professional in 2005 and is the only snooker player from NI to hold the World No1 ranking position.

An eleven-time ranking event winner, the 39-year-old was recently denied a shot at a third NI Open title, following a 6-3 semi final defeat at the Waterfront.
