Molchat Doma Bring Mystifying Brutalism to Australia’s Cold Wave Revival – Backseat Mafia

by wellnessfitpro

Belarusian post-punk outfit Molchat Doma are returning to Australia this December, bringing their uniquely brooding sound to the East Coast for three shows only. The trio will play Naarm/Melbourne’s Forum on December 17, Gadigal/Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on December 18, and Meanjin/Brisbane’s Tivoli on December 20. It’s their first visit since their meteoric rise from underground cult status to global acclaim.

For the uninitiated, Molchat Doma represents the return of post-punk, new wave and synth-pop. Everything they create is dark, minimalist, and hypnotic. Their music feels like greyscale melancholy and brutalist architecture.

Their latest album, ‘Belaya Polosa’, is a reflection of reinvention. Written after the band relocated from Minsk to Los Angeles, it captures the dissonance of displacement (both sonically and emotionally). In 2020, their song ‘Sudno’ (Boris Ryzhy) went viral on TikTok, soundtracking a wave of DIY videos and pulling millions into their orbit. What began as a cult fascination with their underground cool has evolved into a full-blown global phenomenon and a fanbase that spans from Eastern Europe to the rest of the world. For fans of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, or the idea of a nightclub inside a haunted brutalist tower block, this is one of the most exciting acts to make it to Australia this year.

Presale starts Monday 13 October at 12pm, with general tickets on sale Tuesday 14 October at 1pm local time via frontiertouring.com/molchatdoma
