GAA club show extent of Storm Amy damage with grounds still underwater

In places, the knock on effects could run for weeks or even months, with some clubs in the west of the province having their sports ground turn into a lake

Storm Amy took a serious toll during Friday and into the weekend with many people still assessing the damage and counting the cost. A number of roads remain closed and people are still without power in Fermanagh and Tyrone, over 48 hours on from the most damaging winds of the storm.

The sporting world took a hit also with a number of games off and grounds damaged. Ulster’s URC game in Edinburgh on Friday night was initially shifted forward before being postponed altogether. The two Irish league games set for Friday night in Belfast were also shelved when it became clear that the winds would be potentially life-threatening at times.

At local level, the majority of junior football games and GAA games set for Friday and Saturday were postponed also.

In Tyrone, the Moy Tir na nOg club shared footage of their grounds which have now become part of the river Blackwater which has burst its banks.

“The storm which hit Ireland on Friday and Saturday has not only caused disruption to this weekend’s GAA fixtures but also impacted our club grounds at Páirc Thír na nÓg,” they stated.

“The video below shows the extent of the flooding to our main pitch, while both training pitches are also under considerable water as well due to the nearby river Blackwater bursting its banks.”
