Rory McIlroy BBC SPOTY award odds slashed after Europe retain Ryder Cup

It has already been a memorable 2025 year for Rory McIlroy and his odds for the BBC’s SPOTY award have been cut after Sunday’s dramatic Ryder Cup win

Rory McIlroy’s 2025 season got even better on Sunday when Europe retained the Ryder Cup against Team USA in Bethpage.

The Holywood native completed the career Grand Slam back in April when he won the US Masters title having also won the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

After a brief dip in form following the Masters, McIlroy returned to winning way in stunning fashion with victory in the Irish Open at the K Club earlier this month.

Following Europe’s dramatic Ryder Cup win on Sunday, McIlroy’s odds of winning the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award have been slashed.

Betfair spokesperson James Mackie said: “After helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup on Sunday, odds have been slashed on Rory McIlroy to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

“The Northern Irishman was 5/2 before the first session at the Ryder Cup and after Europe just managed to get over the line and back up 2023’s success in Rome, McIlroy’s SPOTY odds have been slashed to 11/8.

McIlroy trails Chloe Kelly, who is the odds-on 4/5 frontrunner to win the award, with Ellie Kildunne the third favourite at 12/1.”

McIlroy won three and a half points from a possible five during the 2025 Ryder Cup, although he lost his singles game to world number one Scottie Scheffler as the home side launched a stunning fightback on Sunday.

It was left to his great friend Shane Lowry to secure the half point to ensure Europe retained the trophy.

McIlroy has previously finished second for the BBC SPOTY back in 2014 while he is a two-time winner of the RTÉ Sports Person of the Year award (2011 and 2014) with Lowry getting the nod in 2019 after winning the Open Championship in Portrush.

The duo are sure to be in the running for the RTÉ award this year as well.
