The fraud was uncovered after a Department for Communities investigation
A man from West Belfast was convited for claiming over £17,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.
Maurice Shannon (67) of Norfolk Way, Belfast, was convicted at Laganside Crown Court today (September 11) for claiming Carers Allowance and Housing Benefit rates relief totalling £17,296 whilst failing to declare he was living abroad.
He was given eight months’ imprisonment suspended for two years. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.
Mr Shannon is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongly obtained to the Department.
