West Belfast rap trio Kneecap have said that they owe their career to the DUP during their set as they opened for Fontaines DC at the Vital festival on Boucher Playing Fields.

As the band took to the stage, Naoise Ó Cairealláin (Móglaí Bap) declared that it was “good to be home” and, referencing the ongoing court case against the group’s frontman, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara), said: “he’s a free man.”

Midway through their set, the trio took a swipe at the DUP and said that they owe their career to the unionist party.

“You couldn’t pay for the PR the DUP give Kneecap,” Ó Cairealláin told the thousands in attendance while Ó hAnnaidh added: “We owe the DUP our career. Well, this is our public thanks to the DUP, you simple c***ts”

The band also took a swipe at the Alliance Party and said that they “need to take a look at themselves.”

“And look, I think the Alliance Party need to look at themselves. If they’re on the same side as the DUP, there must be something wrong with the Alliance Party,” Ó Cairealláin told the crowd.
