Shane Lowry: Man charged with murder after fatal stabbing in Dunmurry

A man has been charged with murder after a man died following a reported stabbing in West Belfast

A murder investigation was launched on Friday following the death of a man reported to have been stabbed in the Mulberry Park area of Dunmurry on August 21.

Officers received a report at around 8.15pm on Thursday that a man aged in his 30s had been stabbed in the Mulberry Park area.

PSNI attended, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, where the man was pronounced dead.

He has been named locally as Shane Tony Lowry, described in a family notice as a “beloved son” who will be “sadly missed by all his family and friends”.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team, investigating the murder of a man in his 30s in the Mulberry Park area of Dunmurry on Thursday 21st August, have charged a man to court. “The man, aged 32, has been charged with murder and possession of a blade or point and is expected to appear before Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 23rd August. “As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”

The death of Mr Lowry has shocked and saddened the community with local residents saying their sympathies lay with his greiving family.

West Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Danny Baker said: “This is absolutely tragic, and I want to extend my thoughts and condolences to the deceased man’s family and friends.

“There is a great deal of shock and sadness in our community this morning at this news.

“The PSNI has confirmed that a man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Anyone with information should come forward.

“I am encouraging people not to engage in speculation and to allow police time and space to complete their investigation.”
