Police investigating connection between flat fire, glider attack and man’s murder in West Belfast

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death and a number of other incidents

Police are investigating whether there is a connection between a flat fire, an attack on the Glider and the murder of Shane Lowry in Twinbrook on Thursday evening.

The emergency services descended on the Twinbrook area on Thursday evening following a number of reported incidents that took place within a short time spam in locations that are relatively close to one another.

This included an arson attack on a flat off the Stewartstown Road at around 7.30pm that saw an apartment block evacuated, an attack on a Glider vehicle on the same road and the death of Shane Lowry in an alleged stabbing incident in the Mulberry Park area, which was reported at around 8.15pm.

The death of Mr Lowry has shocked and saddened the community with local residents saying their sympathies lay with his greiving family.

West Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Danny Baker said: “This is absolutely tragic, and I want to extend my thoughts and condolences to the deceased man’s family and friends.

“There is a great deal of shock and sadness in our community this morning at this news.

“The PSNI has confirmed that a man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Anyone with information should come forward.

“I am encouraging people not to engage in speculation and to allow police time and space to complete their investigation.”

Police have told Belfast Live that while the investigation into Shane Lowry’s death is still at an early stage, officers are looking at the possibility that the three incidents are connected.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The investigation is at an early stage, however, our ongoing enquiries will include looking into any possible related incidents.”

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody at this time. Police have said they are not looking for any other suspects following the death.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team, said: “We received a report at around 8.15pm that a man aged in his 30s had been stabbed in the Mulberry Park area of Dunmurry.“Officers attended, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. Sadly, he was pronounced dead.“A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. At this time, we are not seeking anyone else in connection with this investigation. “We would appeal to anyone with any information in relation to the incident, to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1633 21/08/25.“You can also make a report online via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport.
