“It’s great to see so many people putting their shoulder to the wheel and doing so much to help this cause and to help families around Ireland. It’s massive.”
GAA star Paudie Clifford is set to participate in this year’s Hurling For Cancer charity match, honouring his late mother Ellen.
Ellen passed away two years ago, and the very next day, Paudie and his brother David represented Kerry in a victorious Munster football final against Clare.
The charity match boasts a line-up of top hurlers including TJ Reid, Patrick Horgan, Lee Chin, Noel McGrath, Jake Morris and Darragh McCarthy.
The event will be held at Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow, featuring Jim Bolger’s All Stars, managed by John Kiely and Liam Griffin, assisted by Larry O’Gorman. They’ll face off against Davy Russell’s Best, coached by Brian Cody and All-Ireland winner Tipperary boss, Liam Cahill.
In an interview with Balls.ie, Clifford expressed: “It’s very important to us. Obviously, it was very tough for all of us. It still is very tough,” reports the Irish Mirror.
He added: “To see Davy Russell and Jim and Úna Bolger all doing so much work for the cause to raise awareness and maybe help another family in the future, or loads of families in the future is massive.
“Obviously, it’s a hard thing to go through, losing your mam when you admire her so much.”
He concluded: “It’s great to see so many people putting their shoulder to the wheel and doing so much to help this cause and to help families around Ireland. It’s massive.”
The match, organised in support of the Irish Cancer Society, boasts a star-studded line-up from the world of racing and other sports, including Niall Quinn and Rachel Blackmore.
Notable figures such as Marty Morrissey, Anthony Daly, Willie Mullins, Bernard Dunne and Paul Townend will also be participating as selectors, commentators, side-line officials, umpires and maor uisce.
Doors open at 5pm, with pre-match entertainment and refreshments on offer before the game kicks off at 7:30pm. Complimentary car parking is available at Netwatch Cullen Park.
Tickets can be purchased from selected Centra and SuperValu GAA ticket agent stores, as well as online at www.hurlingforcancer.ie (£10 for adults, £5 for children).
Hurling for Cancer Research kits are on sale from Cúl Sliotars for just £50, with 10% of the proceeds going to the charity.
All income from ticket sales and donations will be directly channelled towards funding vital cancer research.
