As the summer months arrive, countless individuals are planning holidays and outdoor adventures to capitalise on the brighter weather. Whilst the UK boasts numerous picturesque destinations, it’s widely acknowledged that our climate has been rather unpredictable – swinging between sweltering 30C heat and torrential downpours. Therefore, venturing abroad virtually ensures sun-soaked days.

Spain remains a firm favourite amongst British travellers, but instead of flocking to popular destinations such as Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Benidorm and similar hotspots, this overlooked gem reportedly provides an ideal blend of urban culture and coastal relaxation – with significantly fewer crowds.

The destination in question is Santander, located in Spain’s Cantabria region. This coastal city sprawls along an expansive bay, featuring numerous spectacular beaches, rolling hillsides and breathtaking panoramas.

The area also boasts an abundance of eateries serving fresh seafood alongside a bustling retail district along Alameda de Oviedo Boulevard. Moreover, the city maintains a laid-back vibe and feels considerably more tranquil compared to other Spanish urban centres.

Visitors can explore culture and heritage at Centro Botin – a contemporary art gallery – or embark on guided tours of the historic Magadelna Palace, dating from the early 20th century.

Fun fact: the renowned Santander bank derives its name from this very city, having been established there.

Recently, a traveller called Ali, who goes by @aligoingabroad on social media, posted about her Santander experience online, describing it as her “favourite hidden gem”. Ali has urged holidaymakers to bypass the usual Spanish tourist traps and instead visit a hidden gem.

She said: “Stop going to tourist spots in Spain and go to this hidden gem. Spaniards say it has the best beaches in Spain.”

She highlighted the variety of beaches suitable for swimming and water sports.

She listed her favourite aspects of Santander, stating: “The city is beautiful, extremely cheap accommodation, escalators around the city so you don’t have to walk up steep hills. Did I mention beautiful beaches? You’ll have a new sunset spot everyday. Quiet areas with no tourists.”

She also pointed out the affordability of the food and the stunning hiking trails.

“I love Santader,” one person chimed in. Another added: “Santander has my heart. I lived there last summer studying Spanish at UIMP [Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo.”

Another individual shared: “Studying abroad here now and falling in love with the city.” While another declared it their “favourite place in the world”.

A previous visitor to the area commented: “Not only is Santander incredible, but the whole region of Cantabria. Really recommended and it’s quite small so it’s very easy to drive to places.” After viewing the clip, someone else was convinced, saying: “You have fully convinced me to go there.”

Travel options include a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander, or a flight to Bilbao followed by a train or bus journey to Santander which takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes. Alternatively, driving or taking a taxi will take around an hour and 26 minutes.
