A court heard the woman was left with stab wounds, a broken arm and her eye was so badly swollen, she is unable to see out of it
A woman was stabbed twice and struck to the head with a baseball bat after her allegedly abusive partner became angry over drugs.
On Monday Coleraine Magistrates Court also heard the victim’s wrist was fractured and her eye was so badly swollen, she is unable to see out of it.
Appearing in the dock charged with attempted murder and a number of other offences, 24-year-old Garion Hanna confirmed his identity and that he understood the charges, many of them said to be aggravated due to domestic abuse.
In addition to the attempted murder charge Hanna, from Carnduff Drive in Ballymena, was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possessing weapons, namely the bat and a knife, with intent to commit attempted murder, resisting and assaulting police, making a threat to kill the complainant, criminal damage and false imprisonment, all said to have been committed on November 29 this year.
Giving evidence that she believed she could connect Hanna to each of the offences, a Detective Constable said police were objecting to bail due to fears that Hanna would commit further offences.
She told the court it was Saturday evening when the complainant dialled 999 to report that she had been stabbed and beaten with a baseball bat. During that call, “she named Garion Hanna” as her assailant and told police she was in fear because “he was still outside.”
When officers arrived, they could see the complainant was in a highly distressed state, that the living room “was in total disarray,” that she had sustained multiple injuries and also that she had a suspected broken arm, “with bone protruding.”
The woman had also sustained two stab wounds, one to her abdomen and another to her leg, the court heard.
Officers were able to record an initial account on the body worn cameras where the complainant told them Hanna became angry and violent over drugs, allegedly kicking her to the head and ribs.
She further claimed that Hanna followed her through the rooms in the house “and would not let her leave” before allegedly launching his attack with the bat and a knife.
When police arrived, he had fled the scene but when he was arrested a short time later, officers noted his clothing was blood-stained.
Police also retrieved a blue baseball bat and the detective told the court the complainant had confirmed she was struck with that bat.
She was taken to hospital where she was treated for a fractured wrist, but despite the officer’s initial observations at the scene, it was not a compound fracture.
The detective revealed the complainant signed herself out of hospital on Sunday and that since then, “I have spoken to her…and she has said she isn’t sure about making a statement for fear of reprisals from the defendant.”
Turning to Hanna’s background, she revealed that he has 90 previous convictions, including assaults and making threats against a previous partner, in addition to breaching court orders.
The officer further revealed that Hanna is currently on bail accused of inciting hatred after he allegedly issued racist and sectarian threats of violence on a TikTok video, and also that he is “classed as a category one offender, at risk of committing violent offending.”
Despite submissions from defence counsel James Carson that conditions could be put in place to address police concerns, District Judge Peter King disagreed.
“You are a proven, clear danger to any female that you form a relationship with and you are facing an allegation at the very apex of the criminal calendar,” the judge told Hanna as he refused bail and adjourned the case to 18 December.
